Backyard Bounty Design Process

Whether you hire Backyard Bounty to do a comprehensive landscape design, or a custom kitchen garden, we will take careful steps to be sure that we build you the beautiful and sustainable garden you want. Whether your project is large or small, there are 4 basic steps to creating the best plan for your garden.

Initial Consultation: At our first meeting, we will discuss what you would like in your garden, your tastes and preferences, and explore ways in which we can achieve your goals at your home.

Site Analysis: Because we believe that the right plant in the right place creates the most beautiful and easy to maintain garden, we take time to carefully analyze your site. We will note existing on-site and immediate off-site conditions, including a soil test of garden beds and lawn area, measurements of plants and beds and prepare a base map of your project area, designating existing house footprint in this area, garden structures to remain, utilities, significant grades and plantings to remain.

At the concept plan meeting, we bring the base map and one or two design pictures to help you choose the concept you want us to develop.

Master Garden Plan: Your final landscape design plan for the defined project area will be a drawing that includes the location, sizes, amounts and names of all new proposed plants, as well as new paths, patios and beds. The drawing will be done to scale. Your Master Garden Plan will also include a plant notebook describing the attributes, care and maintenance of all new plants to be installed in your garden.

Getting Started

Taking a few minutes to collect the following before our initial consultation helps us create a garden that is just right for you:

  • A copy of your home’s survey. You probably got a copy of this survey or platt when you bought your home.
  • A description of how you use your garden now, and how you would like to use it in the future.
  • A list of your favorite plants and colors, and/or descriptions of furniture, art, and designs that you like
  • Pictures of gardens or places that you enjoy and/or find beautiful. These could be pictures from a magazine or book, photos from a vacation, or cut-outs from a catalogue.
  • A list of “don’t likes.” This list can include plants you are allergic to as well as colors and styles that you find unappealing.
